Mwalling with Mwom
So … it was years in the making … but recently,
I hit the mall with my mom.
Yuhp … she had been anxious to see me in girl-mode of late …
And I was happy to please. 🙂
Now despite seeing plenty of pictures of me … apparently she remained concerned that I was going to exhibit Jerry Springer-type tendencies …
“Don’t wear one of those … what are they called … belly shirts !!”
“No worries Mom … I won’t. I usually don’t show my belly until the second date.” 🙂
Uhhhhh … unfortunately that particular response was deemed not amusing by Mom and resulted in a few rather stern words from her.
Oh well … add another mark to the count of people I’ve irritated for the week.
Now my dad wasn’t quite ready to see me yet … so Mom and I agreed to meet at a parking lot near their house and then I’d drive us to the mall.
Which we did ! 🙂
I have to say … Mom exhibited practically no nervousness … none whatsoever.
Which actually unnerved me a bit !! 🙂
She complimented me on my tasteful make-up (apparently mistaking my laziness for tastefulness !! lol)
And said she was glad I didn’t sound like Minnie Mouse … which for some gawdforsaken reason was what she had expected. Yikes !! 🙂
Before entering the mall … I gave her the brief speech …
“Now … if we run into someone you know, don’t freak … if we’re seperated at that point … I’ll just roam a short distance away until you’ve finished socializing … if we’re together, just introduce me as Amy and you don’t need to go into more than that.”
“That’s not a concern … I shop this mall several times a week and I NEVER run into anyone I know there.”
“Well, then it won’t matter. But I’m warning you … in my experience, if you’re going to run into anyone you know … the odds have increased dramatically today.”
My dad needed a new winter coat … well, not really … but my mom was on a mission to find him one if the right sale price was present.
So first we hit Penney’s … where an acceptable choice was found … but would have ended the shopping trip way too quickly … so we decided to venture further into the mall … Sears was actually Mom’s target … which is generally, inconveniently located as far away from Penney’s as possible.
Which meant that we got to hit a bunch of the stores I like to frequent …
And generated our first Mother-Daughter series of interactions …
“You paid what for those jeans, they’re worn for heavens sake … and used !! What were you thinking? You can’t wear those anywhere.”
“Please tell me you don’t really buy things from in here … it’s just … disgusting.”
“I’m not going in there … look at those clothes, why would you even think of wearing something like that?”
In case you haven’t figured it out … my mom can be somewhat opinionated !! lol
So we finally made it to Sears … with me having decided to pass on the top at Buckle that I liked … at least until my next trip to the mwall. 🙂
Mom was also looking for a rocker cushion set … so we ventured to housewares … and were roaming the aisle when I heard her name mentioned.
I smiled knowingly and continued my progression through housewares … leaving my mom to talk with the people she knew …
And smirked as I savored my pending “I told you so !!” LOL
“OMG !! You were right, I haven’t seen them in probably 15 years ! I used to work with both of them … it was so nice seeing them !! But I can’t believe it !! I never see anyone I know here !! How did you know ?”
I just smiled. We all know how I know that stuff !! 😉
Mom called Dad and he vetoed the idea of getting him any coat … his was fine he claimed.
Whatever.
So we popped into a few more stores in the mall … acceptable ones ya know … the kind that carry the types of clothes any self respecting girl would wear …
But apparently I have a knack for finding inappropriate wear …
“You can’t fit into that.”
Yeah … in all honestly … there was no way I could … but that wasn’t the purpose of me holding it up !!!!
After we wandered the mall for a while longer … we stopped at Linens and Mwore … Bed, Bath and Beyond … and a few other stand alone stores.
We had some emotional moments … when Mom was crying while commenting how she felt she had just buried her son … and when she was asking me some very blunt, hard questions …
But all in all …
It was a very fun time.
A very relaxing time.
And a very healthy excursion for both Mom and me.
Thanks Mom !!! 🙂
Beth, I am sorry to hear of your mother’s misfortune. Shaft
That is simply wonderful for you Amy! It does make me sad though, because I would love to do that with my mom, but shortly before my coming out she suffered a stroke that has left her impaired and unable to comprehend much. She’ll never be able to know the real me. I do have an Aunt in California, maybe I’ll visit her and go malling.
Beth
We knew it would all be good with Mom. She is a mama bear when it comes to her children.
Baby steps. I’m so proud of you and your mom. You’ll see it can only get easier for her now.
At least your mom still connects with you. Makes a big difference…
I’m dizzy and I need to see a doctor.

Sounds like you and mum had a great day out!!! :O)
