Amy’s Super Bowl Review

I liked both teams … the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers sucked two years ago … with a 1 – 15 record … so they brought the underdog element to the table.

The Patriots sucked for a long while, won the Super Bowl two years ago … and have two former Michigan men in their starting line-up … Tom Brady and Ty Law.

So if I had to pick a team to win … I’d go with the Patriots … but I wouldn’t be bummed by any means if the Panthers took the trophy.

The game was boring for the first 26 minutes and 55 seconds … with neither team scoring … but in the last 3 minutes and 5 seconds of the first half … 24 points were scored and the Patriots went into half time with a 14 – 10 lead. It was definitely a fun end to the first half !!

The second half was really exciting … Patriots went up 21 – 10, then the Panthers scored a touchdown … went for two and missed … leaving the score at 21 – 16 in favor of the Patriots … then the Patriots had the ball in first and goal territory again when Tom Brady threw an interception in the end zone. Three plays later the Panthers scored on an 80 or so third down pass taking the lead 22 – 21 … they went for the 2 point conversion again and failed. The Patriots came back and scored a touchdown with just under 3 minutes left in the game … taking the lead 27 – 22 … the Patriots went for 2 points and converted … for a 29 – 22 lead. The Panthers came back and scored a touchdown, kicking the extra point … to tie the game 29 – 29 with 1:08 left in the game. The Patriots got the ball to the 24 yard line of the Panthers with 9 seconds left … leaving them a 41 yard field goal attempt … and though their field goal kicker missed two shorter field goals earlier in the game … he nailed this one … giving the Patriots a 32 – 29 lead with 4 seconds left on the clock. They kicked the ball off to the Panthers … who returned it to about their own 20 as time ran out. Final Score … Patriots 32 – Panthers 29. A great, great game. Lots of excitement and I put my cheerleader outfit to good use (just seeing if you’re actually reading this !! lol) Oh yeah … and who was the MVP … Tom Brady … from where people ??? The University of Michigan !!!! Wooo hoooo !! Go Blue ! 🙂 It’s been said before, but it’s unfortunate that either team had to lose. I’m sorry you both couldn’t win.

So that’s the game … but the Super Bowl isn’t supposed to be only about the game …

It’s about the entertainment and the commercials, too.

Well … it’s supposed to be … but this year … it was all about the game, which was great, but the entertainment and commercials …

Were lame.

Well, except for Beyonce … she sang the National Anthem … and she did a nice job.

Unfortunately, things went downhill from there.

The Halftime Show totally blew …

Janet Jackson just doesn’t lip sync well. And I’m still confused about that tail she was wearing.

P. Diddy, well …. he was wearing a nice winter coat … and was actually the best of the lame acts!!

Nelly? I’m not wasting my time discussing.

Kid Rock … attended the same lip sync school as Janet … and he was wearing an American Flag in the form of a schmock. Nice.

Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson finished up the halftime performance … and not a minute too soon … ’cause otherwise … apparently Justin was going to get Janet nekked before the end of the song … There is now a slight bit of controversy … because before the show, MTV stated to be sure to watch half-time … as it was going to be Janet’s shocking moment … but then when the “shock” created a bit of controversy … MTV and CBS said they had no idea it was supposed to happen … they blamed it on a “costume” malfuction … yeah right … anyways … the “controversy” was that at the end of the song … Justin ripped off one of the coverings over Janet’s right breast, leaving her breast with a star shaped pastie attached … exposed for the Super Bowl audience to view !!

Now … as far as the commercials go … apparently CBS couldn’t sell out their advertising spot inventory … because there were a ton promotional spots for their own shows … seemed like that’s all they were showing.

And the commercials themselves … the ones people paid money … real money to air … generally lame. As far as entertainment value and memorable qualities … let’s just say that Taco Bell, Ford, McDonald’s, Florida Orange Juice, Cialis, Schick, Gillette, Fed Ex, Mircrosoft, Expedia, Monster, Levitra, Linux, IBM, VISA, Honda, Mastercard and Cadillac all wasted their money. There were also a ton of commercials for upcoming movies … none really seeming that great … including, Van Helsing (reminds me too much of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Troy (Brad Pitt in a toga? I’m sorry Brad does nothing for me, thumbs down), 50 Dates (I’ll probably rent it on dvd), Miracle (it’s about the 1980 USA hockey team, it actually looks good. Hottie and Baby Spice saw it last weekend and gave it a very good review, two beer bottles up), The Alamo (I’m just not into war movies that don’t involve laser guns), Starsky and Hutch (I’m undecided about it, I really think I want to see it, but am incredibly embarassed admitting such), Secret Window (Johnny Depp flick, I know a lot of girls like him, but I’ll pass), Hidalgo (Viggo Mortensen stars … ’nuff said), and finally The Lady Killers (doubtful, but it has possibilities).

Now though there wasn’t one single commercial I felt was worthy of being deemed an Amy Super Bowl Classic … here’s a summary of the commercials that were kinda okay.

The show started with the California Milk Association doing a bit of a couple of bulls oogling a couple of cows to the tunes of Styx’s Lady … Great Cheese Comes From Happy Cows …. it was one of the better commercials.

Tostitos had a mildy humorous commercial about a bride liking football.

Bud Light wasted money with some stupid graphics commercial …

But Pizza Hut had a worthy one with Miss Piggy getting jealous over the interest Jessica Simpson and Kermit are showing in one another.

Bud Light recovered and made me smirk with an ugly mutt named Fergus biting some guy in the balls to get his owner a Bud Light.

Dodge Magnum was selling a new car style allowing people to get a monkey off their back … with lots of people walking around with chimps attached to themselves.

Pepsi had a bit with bears breaking into a cottage and then needing some Pepsi, acquired at a convenience store when the bears dressed up as the cottage owners and passed a check … with a fake id … a lot of effort for little punch. There commercial with music downloads to the backdrop of I Fought The Law tunes was much funnier. The large girl in the diner catching the eye of the heartbroken boy was stupid. Probably their more talked about spot was one where a small boy chooses between Pepsi and Coke … gets a Pepsi, sees a guitar and ends up buying both … the young boy is James Hendrix. Next to the Coke machine is an acordian store … whatever. I’m a Coke girl.

7-UP had a spot with that one dude who has been their spokesman for a while … driving a van and offering $1,000,000 if anyone could dunk in the attached basketball goal … his driving keeps people from accomplishing it. It was okay, but what you’d expect to see any other weekend.

Charmin had a sorta funny ad with a quarterback feeling up some toilet paper sticking out of his center’s back pants … disturbing, but kinda funny.

Mitsubishi did a spot throwing things out of the back of two dualing semi’s – with a Mitsubishi and a Toyato swerving to avoid them. Okay, but continuing the trend … what you’d expect on any other weekend football game.

Lay’s Potato Chips had a commercial where a couple of older people were fighting and tripping each other to get to a bag of chips … punch line was that when the guy got the bag, he found the woman had his false teeth. Okay.

Staples did a bit with a office supply godfather getting his due … nothing special.

Nextel had some dude in a car playing in a football game … personally that advertisement offended me much more than Janet’s bare breast … I mean … what an insult to football … even putting a car racer (in his car of course) on the same field as football players !! 🙂

AOL Top Speed did three different commercials with the crew from American Chopper … they were slightly amusing, only because I watch the show, if you don’t know who the three guys were … I question whether it would be memorable or funny. And it was actually kinda confusing what AOL was pushing.

Bud Light had a spot where I guy ends up getting a bikini wax in his quest for a Bud Light. Sorta funny, but very predictable. They had another spot with a horse farting on a girl on a sleigh ride with her boyfriend … he bends down to get them Bud Lights as the horse explodes and leaves her looking burned. Fart jokes can be funny, but this was too expected. They had another with a talking chimp which was funnier.

H&R Block had a commercial with the Willie Nelson doll … offering tax advice. Sarcastic and humorous. 🙂

Chevy had two spots … one for the Aveo where basketball players looked like munchkins once they got in the “roomy” car – no go. They had another with a bunch of kids getting soap in their mouth for saying ‘Holy Sh…” upon seeing a new Chevrolet … that was entertaining.

Budweiser had a bit with a referee being yelled at by a coach and the announcers wondering how he could stand it … it then cuts away to showing his wife nagging him … predictable, but funny. Budweiser had another bit where a donkey wanted to be one of the Clydesdales … nice production, but not a good punchline. Their other bit of the dude driving cross country to return a tube of lipstick his girlfriend left, only to find out it wasn’t her lipstick, was way too predictable … not funny.

Sierra Mist had a guy in a kilt standing over a cool air outlet on a really hot day in the middle of a parade … just grooving to the comfort … and a young boy who observed the gyrations saying “Dad, that’s just wrong” … it was funny. Another with a guy jumping from the top of a building into a pitcher of water too cool himself off was silly … and a rip-off of the Pepsi spot were the boy sucked himself through the straw into the Pepsi bottle.

Anheuser Busch had a couple of nice public service commercials … one for a designated driver and another regarding underage drinking … both were nicely produced and worthy. But nothing you would expect to see any other time of the year.

The Super Bowl spots ended with a Subway commercial making light of people misinterpretting their catch phrase … Good, so you don’t always have to be. I liked it. It wasn’t of Super Bowl caliber, but it was amusing.

My favorite spot was not even an advertisement, but one of the free promos for the NFL … it had a bunch of players/coaches from play-off teams singing … Tomorrow … with the end tag line that Tomorrow … We’re All Undefeated. It was cute.

Nonetheless… all in all … it was a bunch of very disappointing advertising content. Thank goodness the game rocked !!!! Which is how it’s supposed to be ! 🙂

  1. Hey! My dad never took the family to a baseball game or football game, but we had season hockey tickets for the whole family and we all enjoyed the games.

  2. A huge hell ya on that one, Danielle. Same to you on the GT-40, Yodette. I wish they would have put the helmet bubble in the new car, though.

  3. Yo Shaft…you’re a goofball, ya know that???

I did see the beginning, with Josh Groban singing. Gawd, does he have a voice! The silly Man on the Moon thing was VERY bizarre…And thats when I tunred off the game and watched the cutie named Hugh…

  4. But, but, Ford put a GT-40 through it’s paces. Sure, it’s tail wagged too much on some of the turns, but for my eye, there never was a car as appealing as the GT. [sigh]

I wasn’t interested in the game and after noticing the commercials were pretty lame this year, I went out shopping.

  5. Makenna, I’m not sure how you stand on the Super Bowl. Are you saying you could take it or leave it? 🙂 Shaft

  6. I have no , repeat NO interest in the superbowl. Its an idiotic expression of american propaganda.
