Hail to The Victors

In 1887 … the University of Michigan’s football team was en route to Chicago for a game against Chicago Alumni of Yale and Harvard …

Along the way … they stopped in South Bend at the invitation of Brother Paul, the founder of modern athletics at the University of Notre Dame …

Brother Paul wanted the University of Michigan to teach the rules of this game called football to a select group of seniors. After spending time teaching the rules of football to the University of Notre Dame players, a game was played. It was called on account of time after one inning (the term used in those days) with The University of Michigan defeating The University of Notre Dame 8 – 0.

So yes, it is true … The University of Michigan taught Notre Dame how to play football.

And today, 116 years later … in defeating Notre Dame by the largest amount of victory ever in the teams’ storied history with one another … and in holding Notre Dame scoreless … once again, it can accurately be said …

The University of Michigan taught Notre Dame how to play football.

Michigan 38 Notre Dame 0

🙂 Did I call that game or what ?!?! hehe

  1. karmic moment…

when I was in high school….our fight song was a re-worded version of the Notre Dame Fight Song.

my son…just starting high school….his school’s fight song is a re-worded “Hail to the Victors”. (that’s the UMich fight song, Stacy!)
(….and “victors” is really a much better tune)

    no wonder I lurk here….

(p.s. – should we tell Stacy about “touchdown jesus”??)

  2. Maize and Blue Stacy !! Maize and Blue !! Our colors are Maize and Blue ! 🙂 (As in the corn, I honestly don’t know why we call it maize, but that’s what we call it.)

And for further Notre Dame – Michigan trivia … Notre Dame’s colors of Blue and Gold suggest another tip of the knockoff hat showing they really wish they were Wolverines. Plus, Notre Dame Stadium … is a miniature replica of Michigan Stadium, The Big House. Notre Dame borrowed the blueprints for Michigan Stadium and built a reduced model, changing only the tunnel to the locker room, which is in the end zone at Notre Dame Stadium. Even more trivia … I’ve never seen Michigan defeat Notre Dame in person … oh sure, I’ve attended games dating back to the early 80’s, but every game I attended, Michigan lost. And that was a lot of losses. Realizing eventually it was my fault for their defeats as clearly I was bad luck for the team … I started giving away my Michigan-Notre Dame game tickets to Notre Dame fans … a minor way to amuse myself, ’cause not only did Michigan start winning the games more frequently, but the poor Notre Dame fan that I gave my ticket to had to watch their team lose in person. I amuse myself in such totally weird ways sometimes !! 🙂
