Friday Five for July 30, 2004
Hey …
Hey …
Heeeeeeyyyyyy ! π
Not bad … only two days late this time with the Friday Five ! Woo hoooo !! π Actually, I was totally on time with these, except I refused to post two Friday Five’s in a row … just not klassy, and you know me … I’m all about klassy !! ;P
Anyways, so I had to wait until I finished a post to toss in the middle …
And since that was done …
This one goes up !! π
It’s a really timely set of questions this go around …
As I’ve been doing some major shopping lately.
“For what?” you ask …
Well, you’ll have to read to find out !! π
1) Of everything in your wardrobe what do you feel the most comfortable wearing? Why?
Well … this depends on the setting. If you’re talking just comfy, comfy while I’m bumming around at home solo with no risk of really seeing anyone but my neighbors … comfy for me is just a cotton cami and a loose fitting pair of sweat shorts. However, if you’re talking going out in public comfortable … I have multiple pairs of drawstring cargo pants that are the most comfortable pants ever created and I’ll “throw with” a pullover polo shirt of some flavor plus some flip flops.
Now, for the second part of the question … “Why?” Well, I think it’s sort of stupid to ask Why?, because the true gist of the question is providing examples of what people find comfortable … why something is comfortable sort of just falls into the definition of comfortable … because it’s something that provides joy or contentment, offering physical comfort, free from stress or tension … which pretty much sums up why I like all of my “comfort” outfits.
2) How would you describe your style?
My style ?? Come now … my style is Totally Amy !! π
Actually, I’m still sort of figuring out my style …
What I like and what works for me …
So it’s not completely set just yet.
However, I’ll do my best to describe what I’m working these days:
My taste and style is obviously heavily influenced by my friends who I spent the most time with during my formative years … yuhp … Singer, Sister and Skipper.
Now … to the untrained eye … my style resembles Singer’s in many ways, and I’ll admit … there are some similarities. But remember … she’s phreaking gorgeous, and on top of that, she has great style sense and taste … so of course I’m going to borrow some ideas from her that work for me. Also, she’s an excellent teacher and has taken the time to teach me how to shop, create outfit ideas, make warddrobe decisions … while honestly evaluating what works for me and what doesn’t … (“No, unless of course you love it, then it looks great !“) And we have similar tastes … so even when independently shopping, we tend to acquire the same items.
So the foundation of my style has been set at the School of Singer. Then when it comes to further finishing touches … I tend to steal ideas from Sister, who is also my make-up advisor … “you need more gloss” or “don’t you dare wear dark lipstick before you get some more fat in your lips, otherwise you’ll look like … HER !“.
Skipper, well … Skipper dresses like the 25 year old chica that she is … which offers me trendy ideas along with fitting in to my tendency to dress younger than my age.
So that’s the background to how my style sort of evolved … now as a description goes … I’d probably call it:
Edgy Preppy.
I don’t do trampy, I don’t to hootchie, I don’t do tasteless, I don’t do uncoordinated, I don’t do old, I don’t do fuddy duddy, and I don’t do unisex.
What I like is basically a classy, clean, respectible look that has some life to it … updated preppy is my taste, flavored with a some flair. Something that kinda fits my age, but has something about it that looks a little edgy or younger than it should be. It might be a tight, form fitting top; a skirt that’s not too short, but if it was any shorter it would be; or some fun, higher heeled shoes.
As far as work clothes go … I really don’t have that much experience with it, but it tends to follow pretty much the same theme, although a bit more toned down … skirts still above the knee, but usually just above the knee, though maybe less tasteful with the walking slit. I do make it a point to wear heels more than many women seem to do … I think women’s work clothes, though certainly more varied than men’s, still tend to be “masculinized” when it comes to skirtsuits and pantsuits, and I feel heels add a nice feminizing touch … a bit of sexiness, but still appropriate. Plus, I like the added height in a workplace-type environment … it offers a bit more of a presence.
Amy Non-Warddrobe Related, But Fashion Tip Nonetheless: I rarely ever wear colored fingernail polish, instead, what I do is a totally low maintenance approach … I wear a wet-look clear polish. It makes them look like you’ve paid attention to them, plus the wet look is sorta sassy, yet … they can chip or start to wear off and it really doesn’t show, so you don’t have to keep them up as much and they never look unattended. I do wear color on my toenails, but only for casual or social wear … I don’t show toe at work, cleavage … maybe, toe … no. π
3) How many pairs of shoes do you own and do you wear them all?
Really not that many, I’m still building up my supply of footwear … however, I will say, I am not an impulse buyer by nature, but when it comes to shoes, I do have that propensity. Let’s see … I probably have about 15 pair total … acquired over a few years. A very sparse collectioooon, and I don’t even come close to wearing them all … I pretty much wear either one of three of my favorite grown-up pair of heels, a pair of flip flops, my Sketchers, or a navy heeled sandal.
4) Where do you buy most of your clothes?
I tend to purchase several things at The Limited, as it seems to fit me well and has many of the looks I like to wear. I spend a fair amount of time in the junior’s department at Marshall Fields. I get things at Banana Republic, though I refuse to purchase anything there unless it’s on sale (imho, though I love a lot of their merchandise, their stuff is way overpriced, fortunately … they pretty much discount everything within 3 weeks of it hitting the floor). I buy many things at Old Navy, Nordstrom Rack, Express and Lerner New York. I also absolutely love Target, where I find some great deals on nice fitting, Totally Amy outfits and accessories.
5) What was the last piece of clothing you bought?
Five bras: two white, one beige, one black and one baby blue. Whatever. π
