So … it’s been mentioned before that I have “special” tastes in movies … and in the first review ever of my web site (which I think is sooo kewl 🙂 ) … Sianna referred to AmyNews.com as “Scathing Essays. Saber sharp wit. Poignant passages, Friday Fives and bad movie reviews” … huh, bad movie reviews? …. okay, so I’m slow, but I’m beginning to realize you’re trying to tell me something … like maybe, a movie shouldn’t be judged solely on whether or not you can get one really kewl quote from it … so I did what every red-blooded, American girl would do … I ran to daddy.

Well, I don’t call him daddy just yet, that’d understandably overphreak him 🙂 … hehe … but I say to him …

“Dad, some of my friends say I have weird tastes in movies and that I give bad movie reviews, do you think they are right?”

His reply?

“You made us go see Joe Versus The Volcano… your friends may have a point.”

Hmmm … something for me to think about. 🙂

Anyways … on with the show ! I knew very little about the premise of the movie except that it was about pirates and Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom were in it. I consider it more of a fantasy-adventure flick and historically have a problem with movies that try to make skeletons look real … as if they are real moving bodies and people. The only movie in my mind that in the past made it look kewl was Army of Darkness (one of my all-time top ten favorite movies … Shop Smart, Shop S-Mart), because in Army of Darkness, they totally mocked any such attempt and just obviously dressed people up in fake skeleton costumes … hilarious !!

Opps …. back to the movie at hand … anyways, the special effects in Pirates … excellent !! … Well done, really cool, didn’t take away from the story by being bad, didn’t overwhelm scenes/action/storyline by being too amazing, they were just right.

Costumes … Whoa. I liked. I liked a lot !! Someone should get an award.

Lighting … Often an overlooked element of a movie. Again … well done. A lot of the movie was set at night … and you knew it was at night, but you could still see all you wanted to see … not like some flicks where the lighting is so pathetic and dark you can’t tell a thing of what’s happening.

Story … Nice pirate plot, plenty of good quotes, humor, and sa-wheet actiooon.

Acting … I like Johnny Depp, but he sorta had to play this slightly mad, slightly drunk captain who had an odd type of slur when he spoke, softened for the Disney audience … I didn’t care for it … but he played the part assigned well … looked maybe a little young for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and I hated how they ruined his scrumptious looks with black, rotten and gold capped teeth, but overall … a fine piece of …… acting. 🙂

Orlando Bloom. One of the lead characters, sooooo yummy to view, almost makes me forget Heath … did a good job. But acting-wise, presence-wise … he’s not up to Johnny Depp level.

So I went to see Pirates of the Carribbean yesterday at the mid-afternoon viewing. I went with my brother’s family, and had assigned seating with a nephew on each side of me … once again I went with the Frozen Pepsi, but I think that’ll be the end of that for a while, I’ll go back to Frozen Mountain Dews … my sister-in-law was there, and she prefers the air-popped popcorn instead of traditional … which means everyone gets air-popped … it wasn’t as bad I as expected it to be … but I still prefer traditonal with boatloads of hot butter-like product … we had primo seats in the big theatre, it was a full crowd, but not packed … so viewing and listening experience couldn’t get any better.
