When Dog the Cat,<\/p>\n

Was a mere …<\/p>\n

Puppy the Kitten,<\/p>\n

We started what became our\u00a0morning routine:<\/p>\n

Wake up,<\/p>\n

Start the coffee,<\/p>\n

Clean his litter box,<\/p>\n

Prepare his breakfast,<\/p>\n

Check the weather,<\/p>\n

I go back the bedroom with coffee to read emails, news …<\/p>\n

While he has breakfast.<\/p>\n

After he finishes breakfast,<\/p>\n

He runs as fast as he can into the bedroom,<\/p>\n

Barks for me to lift him up on the bed,<\/p>\n

Which I do,<\/p>\n

Then we finger wrestle.<\/p>\n

He bites my finger with his tiny little puppy kitten teeth,<\/p>\n

And I say “Ow ow ow … kisses, not bites”,<\/p>\n

At which point he\u00a0starts\u00a0giving me kisses and licks me with his tongue of coarse sandpaper.<\/p>\n

I always wondered why he seems to understand the word kisses.<\/p>\n

Fast forward eight years and only a few things have changed.<\/p>\n

We still:<\/p>\n

Wake up,<\/p>\n

Start the coffee,<\/p>\n

Clean his litter box,<\/p>\n

Prepare his breakfast,<\/p>\n

Check the weather,<\/p>\n

I go back the bedroom with coffee to read emails, news …<\/p>\n

While he has breakfast.<\/p>\n

After he finishes breakfast,<\/p>\n

He run as fast as he can into the bedroom,<\/p>\n

But now …<\/p>\n

Dog The Cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Since he has grown into a full-fledged, adult Dog the Cat …<\/p>\n

He does not need any assistance getting up on the bed.<\/p>\n

Now he enters the bedroom at a quick clip,<\/p>\n

Running that borders on a gallop.<\/p>\n

Rounds the bed,<\/p>\n

Hops up on the ottoman in stride,<\/p>\n

Projects onto the chair,<\/p>\n

Elevates off the night stand,<\/p>\n

And goes airborne,<\/p>\n

After which all 42 inches, 20 plus pounds of him lands on my belly.<\/p>\n

Yes, you definitely feel it when he lands.<\/p>\n

Dog next to his U of M teddy bear named Lloyd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

He will then lay still next to me for a couple of seconds before …<\/p>\n

Hopping back up and going all krazy\u00a0bites on my arm,<\/p>\n

Like he used to do with my finger,<\/p>\n

Until I say\u00a0“Ow ow ow … kisses, not bites”,<\/p>\n

At which point he immediately starts licking me\u00a0with his tongue of coarse sandpaper.<\/p>\n

It’s still weird to me,<\/p>\n

How\u00a0he seems to understand the word kisses.<\/p>\n

I love our Morning Routine.<\/p>\n

Though I really should have put a bit more long term routine thinking into our early days together,<\/p>\n

As my arms are littered with Dog The Cat teeth marks.<\/p>\n
