I haven’t taken the approach of telling any other attorneys for the most part …<\/p>\n
Knowing full well that we’re a gossiping sort,<\/p>\n
And it’d make it’s way around the circuit quite quickly,<\/p>\n
As soon as just a few outside my own firm found out.<\/p>\n
However,

\nA few months ago I had to go to court as a boy …<\/p>\n
For a case,<\/p>\n
And I couldn’t find anyone to cover it for me.<\/p>\n
It was actually a pain in the butt,<\/p>\n
Not because it was challenging or anything …<\/p>\n
But just because I had to do it.<\/p>\n
Anyways …<\/p>\n
I did it,<\/p>\n
‘Cause I had to …<\/p>\n
And as I was walking into the room off to the side of the courtroom where the attorneys in this courthouse congregate,<\/p>\n
And often meet with the judge,<\/p>\n
You know, where the real work gets done …<\/p>\n
I saw an attorney from my home court,<\/p>\n
Whom I hadn’t seen in months.<\/p>\n
And it wasn’t just any ol’ attorney,<\/p>\n
But a friend of mine.<\/p>\n
A fellow criminal defense attorney who has practiced much longer than I …<\/p>\n
And who I look up to as a peer,<\/p>\n
When he tells me something …<\/p>\n
I always listen.<\/p>\n
And he’s the first peson I think of when I’m referring out cases I can’t take.<\/p>\n
He’s a great attorney,<\/p>\n
Good guy, and …<\/p>\n
Has one of the best e-mail distribution lists around for funny junk e-mail …<\/p>\n
People ask to be placed on it.<\/p>\n
I really didn’t expect to see anyone there from my home county,<\/p>\n
So I was a bit caught off guard seeing him.<\/p>\n
Though I later found out …<\/p>\n
He didn’t even recognize me at first.<\/p>\n
Go figure ! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
Anyways,<\/p>\n
I had been meaning to talk with him for a while …<\/p>\n
And expected to do it via phone,<\/p>\n
Since I really didn’t anticipate seeing him while doing the Joe …<\/p>\n
But as I was there,<\/p>\n
And he was there,<\/p>\n
I figured what the hell …<\/p>\n
Let’s see if he has some time.<\/p>\n
So after he figured out who I was …<\/p>\n
And he was done with his case,<\/p>\n
I asked him to wait for me outside the courtroom while I did my deed …<\/p>\n
Because I wanted to talk with him about “something<\/i>“.<\/p>\n
He said “sure<\/i>” …<\/p>\n
And after I did my 2 minutes of court time,<\/p>\n
I walked out in the hall and found him wrapping a discussion with his client.<\/p>\n
He joined me a few minutes later and we walked over to a little restaurant for some coffee while I talked to him about “something<\/i>“.<\/p>\n
It was pretty much the same speech I have given so many times I really can’t count them anymore …<\/p>\n
Though if anything,<\/p>\n
Maybe a bit more abbreviated.<\/p>\n
However,<\/p>\n
It was the first time I told any attorney …<\/p>\n
Someone who I know out and about in the courtrooms,<\/p>\n
Other than those in my firm,<\/p>\n
Or old firm.<\/p>\n
I really wasn’t nervous at all …<\/p>\n
Giving the talk is second nature now,<\/p>\n
It’s just that I was well aware that at the time …<\/p>\n
I was moving my transition to another point,<\/p>\n
Disclosure to my professional peers.<\/p>\n
He took it well.<\/p>\n
Super well, in fact.<\/p>\n
A totally classy, smart guy.<\/p>\n
He asked good questions …<\/p>\n
Very good questions,<\/p>\n
And wanted to know what I was going to do professionally.<\/p>\n
I told him that I’m sort of winging it as I go along …<\/p>\n
That originally I had planned on relocating,<\/p>\n
But after the initial acceptance and support I received from my friends and family here …<\/p>\n
I decided to give sticking it out here a run.<\/p>\n
He commented that as he was listening to what I was telling him …<\/p>\n
His initial reaction was that there was no way in hell I could stick it out in this community …<\/p>\n
It’s way too conservative,<\/p>\n
And life in the legal arena would be difficult.<\/p>\n
But that the more he thought about it …<\/p>\n
The more he became of the opinion that I should give it a run here,<\/p>\n
That it’d be “interesting” for a few weeks,<\/p>\n
But that eventually it’d probably blow over.<\/p>\n
He commented that he thinks I should visit with a few of the principal judges I practice in front of …<\/p>\n
To give them a heads up before just walking into their courtroom,<\/p>\n
Which was great advice,<\/p>\n
Of which I’m following.<\/p>\n
And he also said that if I was ever in court …<\/p>\n
Felt uncomfortable and needed someone to run interference for me,<\/p>\n
To just track him down and he’d play blocker for me anytime.<\/p>\n
Too kewl ! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
We chatted some specifics …<\/p>\n
My new name, e-mail addresses and the such,<\/p>\n
And I asked him to make sure he kept me on both of his e-mail distribution lists,<\/p>\n
The funny one …<\/p>\n
And the really funny, raunchy one on which he only has guys included.<\/p>\n
He said that he’d keep me on both …<\/p>\n
But he didn’t,<\/p>\n
I’m just on the funny one now,<\/p>\n
Which is also kewl ! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
It’s now been a few months since I’ve told him …<\/p>\n
And he’s proven I couldn’t have picked a better person to start my professional outing with …<\/p>\n
He checks in with me here and there,<\/p>\n
Even refers me some cases.<\/p>\n
As he says …<\/p>\n
“You’re a sharp attorney and fun person. I want you to stick around town and I’m going to try and make you do so, even if you’re kicking and screaming.<\/i>”<\/p>\n
But the best part of the entire conversation was the very end …<\/p>\n
When the bill for the coffees came,<\/p>\n
And I realized I was going to have the say the following …<\/p>\n
“Ahhh, I know I asked you to join me for coffee, but you’re going to have to pick this one up. I don’t have any money with me, ummm … I left my purse in the car !<\/i>” \ud83d\ude42 *shrug*<\/p>\n
His response?<\/p>\n
“LOL I’d be glad to ! And thanks for taking the time to tell me personally. I appreciate it.<\/i>”<\/p>\n
See … there is such a thing as an attorney with a good heart !!! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
