Thanks, Amy. I always love hearing about good performers I didn’t know existed. I think I could put you on to some that would blow you away. Don’t focus on covers? Hell, I ignore them for the most part, unless someone does something extraordinary that changes the way I thought about a song. I prefer originals exclusively and I’m always trying to bump covers out of my setlist with originals, but there are a few tunes I love to respect by playing. I just listened to a few of John’s tracks and they are very nice. While we’re both largely acoustic, he’s a little more upbeat and brighter than I am. Dark folk is my thang. He writes with more brevity, too. What I lack in guitar firepower I think I try to make up for in word count. Heh.
I wish him luck but, damn, solo artist is a tough way to earn a living. I’m glad I have a day job I enjoy so there’s no musical pressure. I started recording last week at a studio here, though so maybe I’ll send you a rough clip soon.
His name is John Rush. He’s really good ! He did a super fab amylicious version of Collide for me Friday night … so fab in fact I bought him a beer in appreciation ! He’s sorta a Howie Day type performer without the Howie Day attitude … in other words, he’ll talk to you, he’s really nice and he doesn’t think you owe him a romp in the hay just because he’s really, really musically talented (yeah I know, but it’s still nice). (And don’t worry Howie Day … you’re still most played on my mp3 player !)
John’s a fella to keep an eye on … if you get the chance to see him perform, definitely take advantage of it and check him out ! And don’t just focus on his covers, his original stuff his good too … we just need to figure out how to get one of his ditties on some teen angst drama show and he’ll be fame ! He’s doing the college circuit quite a bit, but he’s also doing bar locals here for the near future … which for those of you who still haven’t figured out where I call hometown … check John’s itinerary and you can see exactly where I was at one point last Friday night during the midst of a pub crawl. 🙂
Amy, while you’re posting for everyone, I hope you can answer one small question — who is the musician in the recent photos you put up? I ask because he looks like he could perhaps be my slightly younger, burlier, and better looking brother.
LOL – I saw Pirates 2 last night. As we walked out of the theater I said to my spouse, “That was the Pirates of the Carribean version of The Empire Strikes Back.”
Yo … I know. Yesterday afternoon I spent with Nephew 2 getting some things for my Dad’s birthday today, then Sister-in-Law, Nephew 1, Nephew 2 and I went to see Pirates 2 – The Empire Strikes Back (it’s worth seeing, but not GREAT, it was a bit confusing and dragged in the middle – I give it a 6.5 out of 10), then when I got home, I fell into a movie popcorn coma and slept until 5:00 AM on my sofa … I woke up, washed my face, went to bed and woke up again at 6:30 AM, got ready for the day, went downtown to the office for a bit, met Mom, Dad and Baby Brother’s family for my dad’s birthday brunch, then Dad, Mom and I went looking for a new computer case for Dad, then I spent the rest of the afternoon/evening – until now – being computer bitch prepping a new machine my mom got and getting another machine tweaked some for Shaft. Sadly, I encountered some frustrations with an unstable internal wireless adapter in the new machine for my mom … I finally gave up for the day and came home after going out with Mom, Dad, Baby Brother, Sister-In-Law and Nephew 1 for ice cream for my Dad’s birthday (Nephew 2 went to camp today) … I figured I had better just call it a day on the computer task because I hit my quota for Ph-bombs on a Sunday … grrrrrrr. Anyways … I’m going to make a zero carb dinner of sorts and then I’ll be back punching away … I might upload some old pics of my neck first … but that depends entirely on whether or not I find the pics where I think they are … since I’m rather computer exhausted at the moment, and if the pics aren’t on my old notebook, then they are on one of my old desktop harddrives in the AmyLab … and I have to find a video card in my box of treats before I can even check out the drives, ’cause I sort of have a video card incident a few weeks back … though on a totally unrelated, geekbutt note … it’s really pretty easy building your own Tivo-type device out of spare computer parts. Anyways … that was my weekend. I might just be up all night writing because I really have a ton of krap to share with you all … a phreaking ton ! 🙂

Amy, thanks so much for asking. The gig went great and I have an open invitation to play there at any time in the future which was so nice to get. It’s also led to some prospects for playing at an acoustic venue in the Golden Nugget and at a sort of country club grill at a golf club here.
I’m an acoustic folk guy but the jazz guitarist who played the venue the week before sat in with me for most of the show and was amazing accompaniment considering we’d never played together before that night and he’d never heard my songs. (I did about half originals and half REALLY obscure covers.)
No video or audio of the show, but I’m expecting a copy of a photo someone took of us, framed, and gave to the venue. They have our photos on the wall there now which is so very cool. I’m starting a recording project next week so maybe I’ll have a studio clip to send you soon.
I do drink Mandarin Orange tea on occasion but I don’t think that’s going to help Jack. Here’s an “out there” prediction: Christopher Henderson will somehow help Jack. I think we both suspect he’s not really dead. Perhaps just “mostly dead.” Heh.
