Code Talking

I’m really not sure from where I picked up the habit …

A movie most likely,

Which one I really can’t remember,

Though it might have been No Way Out,

Or possibly from one of the greatest books of all time … Dune.

No … I think it was No Way Out.

Anyways,

What I do sometimes …

Is code information disclosed in a manner,

Such that if it’s passed along to others,

I can identify who did the passing along.

It really serves no purpose,

Of course,

Other than to amuse me.

Because once the information is passed along,

It’s not like it can be retracted.

And if I’ve chosen to share information …

I’ve also chosen to accept the risk that it will be passed along.

Anyways …

I used to play the coding game fairly frequently when providing my name and address to people I suspected would resell it,

Spelling my name slightly differently,

With different initials,

Middle name,

Spelling,

Things like that.

It got to a point where I could tell rather quickly …

Who sold me out causing me to get the junkmail currently filling my mailbox.

Sometimes with talking with people …

When trying to ascertain the truth about something,

I consciously do the same thing …

Include or exclude ancillary information that might assist in determining what I seek to determine down the road.

And sometimes,

I either subconsciously or accidentally do the same thing …

And subsequently make a mental note of minor variations in the information I disclosed to people,

Even though I have no intention of evaluating their word of confidence.

News of Me ver 2.0 seems to be disseminating along the gossip highway at a greater pace these days,

Twice this past week I got unexpected feedback from people who hadn’t heard the scoop first or second-hand.

The first time I was told what was known about me …

It rattled me.

Not that they knew,

I’m glad they did.

No,

What rattled me was who they heard it from …

A judge,

And what they knew,

‘Cause that told me how the information got there,

Which surprised me.

The second feedback I received didn’t rattle me at all …

Just confirmed something I already suspected,

But now knew …

For certain.

It really doesn’t bother me at all that the information is being spread …

Well,

I guess is bothers me a bit that I’m being talked about,

But I expect it.

If it was happening to someone else,

I’d be talking about it.

And as long as at some point they say something along the lines of …

You know, she’s … really not that bad looking now.

I guess I’m as fine with it as I can be. 🙂

Mainly though,

I just find where I had the leaks …

Really interesting.

  1. Hey Becky !! 🙂 Nice hearing from you !!

What would you never have believed …

That I had a sex change,

Or that you’re drunk enough to think I’m hot?? LOL 🙂

  2. As a matter of fact, I did just that with my mother recently re: M. I was very interested to discover not only the inaccuracies (as well as the outright lie that had been addended to it, from whom I am not yet sure) that got back to me, but was impressed to discover the SPEED with which it traveled – as well as the unexpected route it took.

When I was in a VERY competitive retail environment early in my working life (managerial and administrative, with close and constant contact with the owners of the companies), where pricing and proprietary information was at a major premium, we in the managerial circle used to SPECIFY misinformation to each salesman, associate AND employee with whom we delt – writing it down (who, what, time and date), and sharing it with each other (in the owner/managerial circle). That way, when the gossip came back, we would know EXACTLY from whom it originated and how long it took to circulate. From that we extrapolated who could and could not be trusted, as well as who could be most depended upon to deliver planted misinformation to either the market in general or specific competitors in particular. It was a MOST instructive exercise.

Code-talk, huh? Tom Clancy? How about from the Berkoff companies?

  3. Thank you !!! It’s driving me crazy trying to remember where I scammed it from … that could definitely be it, because yes,

    I’ll admit it …

    I read Clancy,

    Grisham too.

    *shrug*

You people don’t respect me anymore, do you ?? 🙂 LOL

  4. Oh, I agree … I’m tired of talking about it, so I don’t mind it getting out like that to people I wouldn’t have any intention of telling anyways … I’ve been counting on the rumor mill to spread the work (though there are still a few I’d like to tell first hand and hopefully will be able to before they hear). However … I’m just more surprised by the original sources of the informatiooooon … I’ll have to remember that when I want to spread a rumor … FAST !! 🙂

  5. Amy,

Think of it this way: the more leaks, the fewer uncomfortable disclosures you have to do.

The other day, someone was talking to my department administrator, saying that they heard that there was now a “crossdresser” in x-ray.
I was so proud of my administrator. He said, “Actually, we have a woman in our department who is appropriately dressed. Since she’s always really been a woman, she USED to be the crossdresser when she dressed like a male; now she’s just dressing like herself.”
