Hey Dad

So my Dad saw me for the first time yesterday ! 🙂

Very Kool !

Mom had called me late in the afternoon and needed me to review some documents for her …

Which is no problem,

But she needed them reviewed immediately …

And I was in the midst of prepping for a trial,

While also trying to find time to meet up with The UnUsuals for a quick Wednesday night drink or two.

I’ll have to meet right now, will that work?

Sure. Dad and I will meet you someplace half-way for coffee.

Fine, but is Dad sure he wants to come? You know I’m chica.

What?

I’m in girl-mode.

I would hope you are, you’re using girl-voice. He’ll be fine. It’s as good as time as any for him.

So at a Burger King, Dad saw me for the first time.

We arrived at the same time and I went to help Dad walk into the BK.

He needs to use one’s shoulder for balance when walking these days if he’s only using his cane and whenever I’m around, I take that as my responsibility to do … it’s my role as oldest and that’s not about to change dammit ! 🙂

Hey Dad !” 🙂

And we smile while he says he’s “okay” in reponse to my inquiry. As he places his hand on my shoulder to steady himself, we begin the walk inside and I mutter …

Watch out for my boob.” 🙂

So I see you’re still a smart-ass.” 🙂

Now seriously, would anyone ever wonder if that’s the case?

Anyways, we make our way into the restaurant and sat down while mom got them some dinner and me some coffee.

I think Mom was more nervous than Dad … not because of any outward signs,

But because she screwed up the pronouns yesterday afternoon more than she’s done in aggregate.

I can’t attribute it solely to me though, she might have been distracted with the circumstances leading us to reviewing the documents … she’s getting ready to retire and that’s stressing her some I’m sure.

Regardless, it’s totally understandable.

And on a positive note,

She only exclaimed once her oft used phrase …

See, it’s when you say stuff like that that it bothers me.

Which is pretty good for me. I think I was spared some further motherly critical commentary because I was in “middle aged daughter dressing her age” mode as opposed to “middle aged daughter dressing like she’s in her 20’s” mode, the latter being a look of which my mom is certainly not a fan ! 🙂

Anyways … after reviewing the documents for her, going over their meaning and answering her questions … we were on our way.

So Dad, how was it?” I asked as we were walking to their car.

Fine. It’ll just take some time, that’s all. You’re a very attractive young lady,” (Editor’s Note: He said I was young, how sweet is that !! :)) “it’s just that I’ve known you your entire life in the other mode and well, seeing you like this is, well …

Weird?

Yeah weird.

I agree, it is.

You know though,” he said as we got to his car, “this might not be all bad … between your purse strap and bra strap, I’m able to get a much better grip on your shoulder than I used to be able.

So I see you’re still a smart ass.” 🙂

What?“, he said with a smirk while adding, “Thanks for helping your mom, we”ll see you later Amy.

Thanks Dad. See ya. See ya Mom.

And with a a hug goodbye to both, I was on my way.

Not a bad way at all to spend an hour on a Wednesday afternoon. Not a bad way at all ! 🙂

  2. Aims, what a wonderful moment it must have been for you!

My own father has made quite the transition with me. We’re now closer than we ever were before, and he proudly mentions his “smart and pretty daughter” to everyone he meets. It’s a nice feeling knowing there still be time left to be a daddy’s girl, isn’t it?

Have it your way, Have it your way!

(guess you did, being in chica mode!)
