Friday Five for March 12, 2004

I’ve noticed a trend in the past few months that my postage of anything on Thursday has become rather …. sporadic. Of course, that really should come as no surprise, as Wednesday night is Bowling With The UnUsual Suspects night … and that pretty much means that Miss Daisy starts drinking at the tailgate at 4:00 pm, Sister joins him at 5:05 pm, Singer makes her appearance around 5:20 pm, and Hottie and I show up anywhere from 5:30 pm or later, sometimes just not making it … this past Wednesday we were all there except for Hottie, who was making his way back into town and was cutting it close timewise.

Sd often happens, this week I arrived exceptionally late … while Singer, Sister and MD were in the midst of talking about me, so late that I was unable to even obtain a beer … so sad. 🙁

Then moments after my arrival, Miss Daisy and Sister left for the alley …

For some odd reason, they always make it a point to be on time, which left Singer and me.

To this day I have no idea why in the world Sister and Miss Daisy always leave early … or why Singer, Hottie and I always stay later (though rumor has it that Singer, Hottie and I have refused to be on time ever since the league failed to re-elect Hottie to a third consectutive term as league Grand Pooba) … but that usually is the case …

Anyways … as Singer and I were getting ready to leave the tailgate and head over to the bowling alley, she asks …

Did you pick up Sister’s birthday cupcakes?

Oh krap !! I forgot !! I’ll go get them now !!” Said desparately as I jumped from my bar stool and headed out the door.

What were you doin … phreakin’ primpin ??” Was all I heard in the background as I left Friday’s. Though I had an odd feeling several people were laughing at me in response to that comment.

You see … somehow, over the last few years …

I’ve become the team errand bitch.

In the early years, before two children, Singer was the team birthday coordinator …

Making sure there were always cupcakes or cake, ice cream and candles for everyone’s birthday;

Then Hottie and I began to share those duties until a couple of years ago when he started traveling much more frequently as a part of his job;

Now Sister has three children to manage (two boys and her husband) and the world’s biggest db for a boss – she has little time for those errand runs – and besides, in this case, it was HER birthday …

Hence, the birthday bitch duties usually fall on me as of late.

(Yeah, I know, we don’t delegate such responsibilities to Miss Daisy … he was always coming back with rum cake or angel food cake dipped in vodka, surprise, huh?)

Anyways, I’m fairly good at it … always getting the cupcakes and ice cream (if desired) …

And I always have birthday candles with me …

However, this time, I did totally forget to pick up the birthday cupcakes.

Why ??

Well, because I was all excited about finding one of Sister’s birthday presents at the last second.

As I was getting ready to leave and pick up the birthday cupcakes, OBP reminded me that there was this hemp product store that might have the lip balm I was looking for as a gift to Sister.

You see … Sister has three non-family, non-UnUsual Suspect loves in her life …

One, beer (obviously);

Two, hemp products ;);

And three, her greatest love of all … lip balm.

Seriously, she usually carries about 20 lip balms of assorted varieties in her purse.

A few years ago I found some hemp-based lip balm which she liked. But the head shop that carried them in the past ceased carrying them … so I’ve been looking all over trying to find them elsewhere. And OBP gave me a good lead … and the place had a nice variety of hemp-based lip balm … so I picked up an assortment for her,

And in my all giddy happy state …

Drove right past the place where I get the birthday cupcakes on my way to the tailgate.

Sucha butt.

Oh well … no worries …

There was a bakery near the bowling alley, I swung by there on the way and picked up the birthday cupcakes …

And since I had spare birthday candles in my bowling bag … the day was saved !! 🙂

Now … as far as bowling goes … we sucked, I think.

Though if I’m not mistaken, we won some points, but I have no clue how many.

However, we did consume fairly significant quantities of beer,

The requisite multiple birthday jello shots,

And we stayed out really, really late …

For a school night.

All I clearly remember is that after the bar was closed,

After the karaoke had finished …

When only The UnUsual Suspects and the Bitch Bartender that was trying to get us to leave remained …

There was Sister …

Taking the stage …

And for the first time ever,

Knowing all the lyrics …

Belting out Donna Summer’s Last Dance.

To which Miss Daisy, Hottie and I soon joined along.

(I’m not sure where Singer was, possibly in negotiations with Bitch Bartender to allow us to acquire additional drinks or simply have further time to just hang out.)

It was an incredibly hokie, kewl ending to a very fun evening.

Muchas Risas ! 🙂

Now, you are probably wondering …
